Power of Nightmares- a film

Go to http://personalgrowthcourses.net/video/power_of_nightmares_bbc
and watch the film The Power of Nightmares. Comment on it please.

Do you believe it is true? Are we manipulated by our governments and first of all lobbyists standing behind them? Is there any way for ordinary people to react to it?

  1. Well this film is extremely left-wing biased and it contains some truth, some half-truth and some lies, just like in communist propaganda movies.

First example it gives of so called 'Phantom Enemy' is USSR which is presented in this movie as a peaceful country which was not dangerous. Do you know that many of this so called 'peace' organizations that opposed military spending in western countries were sponsored by USSR?

    Here are some documents: http://www.bukovsky-archives.net/pdfs/peace/peace-eng.html

If Al-Quada does not exists then who organized 9/11, Madrid and London attacks?

Islamic terrorism is not a new problem, film suggest that politicians started to create phantom enemies in late 70's but many countries like Israel had to deal with it much earlier.

Surely many people and organizations try to cash in on the situation but everyone simply does what is in his best interests, I don't see any conspiracy here but threat is real as it was demonstrated today in Moscow.

Furthermore I'd say it's rather media that try to scare us not the politicians, do you remember bird and swine flu hysterias :) ?

  2. To me you’re right. Politicians are not the only one source of “Phantom Enemy” case. Of course when people started to abandon their religion, politicians were looking for another way to keep manipulating us. At the same time, media became more popular and common. Journalists, TV stars and other well-known faces made us believe in everything what they say. Most of conspiracy theories came out from them. No matter if someone died or committed a terrorist attack, we used to think something extra-ordinary had happened and that the truth about it wasn’t so simple. Actually I think there is a possibility, that phantom enemy does exist, but I guess it shouldn’t be blamed for everything that had happened before, because it’s almost obvious that for example Al-Quaida is guilty of London attacks.

  3. I'am afraid you miss one point. This documentary doesn't literally say that everything was caused by a phantom enemy. It's rather an invitation to read between the lines from the whole media hype that comes to you. From such standpoint you could state that the legendary terrorist network is in fact small group of islamic fundamentalists, which I believe is possible. Even if it's a thousand of people still it isn't a whole islamic society (19,2% of world population). I also think that you're overestimating the medias - it's often said that they shape our minds. In fact, they simply describe the reality in a way that causes as much of interest as it's possible. Fear is a great emotion that helps to achieve such goal. Without a doubt the policy pulls the strings in this situation. And behind the scenes await industry and financial giants. Medias just pass interfered information to people.

Documentary was very interesting and I really like such an idea for this blog. It definitely encourages the discussion. Regards.

  4. Information can be easily manipulated so everyone has their own truth. It's possible that the real truth never comes out.

My advice is: observe, draw your own conclusions, have your own opinions, decide for yourself.

  5. I find the document very interesting, and not missing a point at all. It's very direct at it's bullet points: around 6th minute one of the speakers claims that "It's not a war on terror, it's a war on terrorists".

With respect to what Michał said, swine flu hysteria is nothing compared to people deciding on killing other people by bombing their houses. The terrible truth is that They seeked an organisation that did not exist. I agree, that they chased a phantom enemy. As the document stated: Every time they got a location of a supposed Al Qaeda or Taliban base they turned up and there was no one there instead of starving shepherds.

Medias have always liked and will always like conspiracies and oversized theories.

By the way, thanks for sharing this great document with us!

  6. I believe in it what was shown in film. I think a lot of sociaties are manipulated by their governments. Since 2001 I have watched and read a lot of materials about World Trade Center and other 'terroristic attacks'. I am almost sure that former president of United States, G W. Bush used Osama bin Laden and Al Kadia for his aims. What aims? For example to have reason to attack Iraq and Afganistan. What for? Well, it's quite simple. The same reasons which had kings and presidents starting war with other countries during past centuries. Rule the world, get others country treasurs, smash enemies to the dust. I think normal, ordinary people aren't powerless. They can do demonstrations, can contact with media. Democracy gives us a way to create political area of country. In elections we can choose our representants of country. Politics who are able to change something. People who can unmask illegal politic of other country.
