In May 2010 rainy and windy fronts caused flooding in southern Poland. The most affected provinces were Dolnośląskie, Podkarpackie, Mazowieckie, Małopolskie and the area of Cracow. Floodwaters have already killed 15 people and approximately 10 000 people being evacuated along the Wisła River, in particular in Cracow and Sandomierz. The floods led to the closure of schools, bridges and the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Numerous roads and railroads are under water, bridges are broken. Power cuts have affected several zones, including part of Cracow and surroundings cities.

Dolnośląskie province

They also launched the Trestno-Blizanowice flooding area with capacity 3.8 million cubic meters. The flood wave on the Odra was slower than in 1997. Due to the high level of water in Odra, bridge in Oława had to be closed. In Wrocław, as a result of wrong information that the water supplies will be stopped, people began in panic to buy food and water from stores.

On 21st May afternoon wave on Odra in Oława reached the state in 1997. Part of flood water spilled to the Lipka-Oława flooding area. As soon as flood wave reached the Dolnośląskie region people began upgrading and sealing riverbanks in Oława, Kotowice, Siedlce, Łany, Wrocław, Brzeg Dolny and Ścinawa. In all these places riverbanks survived. Hundreds of firefighters, soldiers and residents of surrounding towns worked for that. Flood alert was also announced in the city of Wrocław. District of Wrocław - Kozanów was flooded, because the river broke the riverbanks. Polanowice and Psie Pole districts were also flooded.

Mazowieckie province

On 19th May flood alerts have been announced in areas of Lipsko, Zwoleń, Kozienice, Garwolin and Grójec because of the raising water level in Wisła. Army and fire brigades fortified Miedzeszyński riverbank in Warsaw at the height of Saska Kępa and the Helskie Coast using sandbags. On 21th May approximately 3 a.m. the level of the Wisła in Warsaw has exceeded 700 cm, at 5 p.m. it was already 764 cm. That same afternoon water flooded into the construction of the Copernicus Science Centre. In the morning of May 22nd in Warsaw, the highest level of water in the Wisła River was 779 cm. 1. The climate changes and volcanic dust caused the the fact that the air got chiller and because of it huge deluges appeared in Poland. Consequently, there is a flood in Poland, people were afraid of it and their were right. Unfortunately the damages are huge. The specialists are doing what they can to help people. However, it is impossible to stop water and it is not possible to secure everyone. When we look at satellite photos we cannot believe that it really happened. We do not imagine ourselves in such situation. People lost their all goods. Personally I did not have any serious problems with flood because I live in central of Poland and there the water was not so high. My parents made some sacks full of sand just in case. Unfortunately my sister's garden plot there was so much water that we could not see the fence. People from flooded areas are afraid of every single drop of rain. Such situation is very difficult to carry on, but when I see all those people who are fighting with water I see the bravery and strength. I have to admit that I admire them and hopefully the society will help them as much as possible. We also should do something to protect out cities and towns from such disasters.

  2. The flood in Poland is incredibly huge. But I think the damage would be smaller if some people wouldn't behave irresponsible. First of all, some of people weren't assured and now they expect to get a lot of money from the Budget. Well, I know they're in terrible situation, but there isn't enough money... they could have thought about it earlier. Don't get me wrong- I mean, I know that they need help but sometimes they should try to think about some assurance while building their houses in flood-risk areas. Positive thing I noticed is the people working together, trying to help each other. Once they could forget about bad things and work hard for everyone's good:) I also think it is nice some charity foundations are trying to organize some food, fresh water and etc for the victims.

  4. I always wanted to see more numbers in all the publications about such topics. Currently I'm not sure if this flood is bigger than the one in 1997. Are there dykes in places that were flooded in that time? Are there people still living between river and dykes? There are many questions to ask, but there seems to be no answers publicly.

  5. Its a real tragedy for sure and our economy will suffer greatly from this event but the most iportant thing is to learn from this tragedy, rebuild as fast as possible, help the victims get back on foot and be ready the next time a thing like this will happen. This is not the first time we have a flood situation in Poland and i fear that people forget about things like this. After its over they are just glad the water is gone and they are safe again. I dont really think we where much more prepared for a flood possibility then in 1997, the same areas like last time are flooded in a lot of cases. Lets just hope this time we'll be better prepared when we see it coming ...

  6. It's really difficult to discuss that natural catastrophy. The main reason is fact, that it mostly affected small towns and villages across the country. Of course purchasing an appropriate assurance should be obligatory but you cannot blame them for weak infrastructure or lack of advanced anti-flood procedures that were applied in major cities. That's why we cannot truly understand the scale of this tragedy because it is so distant to us. However fottage with new houses flooded to the first floor shocked me.

  7. Well I wouldn't overestimate the size of this natural disaster, of course many people have lost a lot of money but still the great majority of Polish territory is untouched. For me problem is that people are building their houses on land which can be flooded.

  8. The flood this year was horrible but it's all because of the volcano from Ireland and dust that is leaking. Unfortunately, Poland did not know how to cope with such disasters, because we can not afford to build a good flood embankments. Big cities have somehow cope but villages are doomed to fail could ever manage to build a good protection against flooding. Insurance is my opinion of each individual case and should not be mandatory.
