Body modification – part II – today’s trends

Scarification
Scarification was typical in the primary ethnic groups, now has become popular in the civilized world too. It is based on burning, defrosting, cutting and removing the skin.

Piercing: labrets, Barbells, Circular barbells, captive bead rings, and flesh tunnels

Nowadays it is very popular. It’s based on piercings of the body in specific places (for example nose, tongue, intimate space) and implementing there earrings. Earring after healing can be converted into another one - more fitting.
The most common body parts are: ears, nose, lips, tongue, eyebrows, nipples, navel, and genitals (including women - around the labia and clitoris, men - penis, scrotum).
tunnels are becoming most popular from some time and the latest trend – something like corset. See examples below:

Of course we must add tattoos here (but I have already written about them).

Also transplantation and amputations of body parts, implants and stitching the mouth and eyes become increasingly popular now.

Some of them are very hard to describe, just look at some examples:

My questions:

This is art or desecration?, The love of beauty or masochism? Do you think that somewhere is still some boundary? If yes please describe where?

  1. I must say, interesting article and very interesting (extreme) examples I mean pictures and videos.
Well, each of us has other feeling for art but to me this kind of activity shouldn’t be named as art, love of beauty etc. Is still some boundary? Maybe yes but not on this stage. I think people can still surprise us with worse things.
But let’s go back to our examples. There are not only ugly people like Stalking Cat but, what’s more important, there are also a few pretty funny faces. Let’s have a look at boys with a donut on forehead. Isn’t funny? Or that girl hole in her chin. It’s interesting how she drinks. And the last one, the girl with elf’s ears... Yes, I know it’s not my business but to me it’s funny ;)

    1. who are you to judge, art is beauty and this is beauty in there eyes, where ever a person sees beauty that is art and that is the amazing thing about it art is in all things. im sure some of us "funny" people find you pretty funny looking too, these individuals are very beautiful because they are expressing who they are, how they feel and this is art. no one should ever judge or make fun of someone expressing their self especially with art. one more thing if you express yourself with all of who you are like me or these individuals you truly don't give a shit what people think about you and you continue making your own art.

I'm not sure that picture with chin hole is a female but I'm sure that drinking in such way could be interesting.

For me the most frightening picture is that with elf girl. Look at her eyes.

Tattoos, funny holes OK but donut guys are stupid.

  3. Can't stop myself from laughing, sorry :) Great materials and an interesting article overall. I must say, I only consider tattoos as fancy 'body modifications', the rest is rather awkward for me. Doughnut guys are the stupidest of all. Some, like the girl with the whole in her chin looks as a photo manipulation... Don't you think?

  5. If you want to be called a dumbass make some of above mentioned body modifications ;) Seriously for me it's just senseless - what's the purpose of it?

    1. art and expressing yourself is the purpose dumbass, it may be radical changes but they are expressing there self while most stay kept locked in a box. where ever a person sees beauty that IS art. take some time to educate your self and judge your self before you judge others.

  6. I just don't like the idea of such operations. I really don't get it. Nonetheless it impresses me that those people seem to feel great about themselves.

  7. Most of them looks funny or bizarre (is Stalking Cat a runway from circus? ). At some point this is still art that could look better (like girl with ribbon on her back), or worse (like guys with brain tumors). I think that real boundary braking will come with genetic modifications.

  8. Personally I think it's pretty stupid. Not only is it dangerous and has a much higher risk of infection than normal tattoos, but it's probably not as permanent. All scars fade with time, even if they are bad.

  9. It's some kind of art but but hard to understand... For me it's masochism...

  10. This is point black insane. It makes me scared to reproduce. The fact that there are comments/opinions other than stating this is completely nuts is comical.

    Holy Cow

    1. judge your self before you judge others, this is art where ever a person sees beauty it is art. at least these people are not afraid to express them self and do what makes them happy while most of society locks them self in opinionated, egotistical, uneducated, non-compassionate boxes, clearly such as yourself.
